Its summer and birds should be flying round doing birdy things. However if your chimney pot does not have a birdguard type cowl on it they sometimes fall in and get stuck. We have rescued dozens of live birds (yay!) over the years and removed many more expired ones (boo!)
Rescue methods include the traditional grab and go to the more exotic where you can get the bird to hop onto a brush and push it up the chimney, we call it the sweeps elevator! Magpies, Pidgeons and Crows and Jackdaws are common but Owls sometimes find their way down too.
Prevention is key - if you dont have a birdguard fitted then consider getting it done, there are different types available and be aware not all are suitable for 'live' chimneys as they are designed for venting redundant ones.
Have a chat with us if you are not sure or if you are hearing odd noises in the chimney, this Exeter Chimney Sweep is happy to help as ever we are on Twitter and Facebook as well as here and Google

There has been a massive amout of coverage in the media about the pollution and its links to burning wood. At Best Chimney Clean, the oldest chimney sweep business in Exeter we know there are lots of misconceptions about stoves, chimneys and chimney sweeps!
We are delighted to support the Burnright campaign and always seek to help and educate our customers on the correct ways to store and burn fuel to get the maximum efficiecy from their applaince. It is brilliant to see DEFRA paying attention to chimney sweeps as we have a significant role to play in education and actively working to reduce pollution.
The image below shows a Clearview Pioneer 400 - an appliance with a very high efficiency rating but because the fuel used was 'wet' with a greater than 40% moisture content it casued incomplete (inefficient) combustion and has effectively blocked the chimney up.
Of course we were able to unblock it BUT, and heres the rub, this sort of burning behaviour can dramtically shorten the life of the chimney liner which is an expensive item to replace and if used correctly will last for many years. It pays to Burnright!
